Verb Eviter: to avoid

The French verb Eviter is used in these ways:

éviter quelqu'un = to avoid somebody

éviter de faire quelque chose = to avoid doing something

éviter à quelqu'un de faire = to save somebody from doing something

It is a regular verb so there is no difficulty in the way it is conjugated. Here are some examples of the use of the French verb éviter:

English translation

June 2008. The country will have to rule the EU very soon, and N. Sarkozy is avoiding a wave of panic taking hold of Europe after the Irish refused to accept the 25 nations'new charter.

He wishes to talk with the countries in question (new members of the East and the Irish) in order to solve the problem. He also said he would give them an extension (delay), the duration of which they estimate will be necessary, but the case does not require ten years of discussions.

The French President promised to listen to the requests of those countries, to discover the reasons for their reluctance towards the new charter and to consider what adaptations are needed to meet their requests.

The President thinks he has avoided the worst when he succeeded to pass this charter through the French Parliament; and for good reason, in 2005 the French vote by referendum went against it.
