Practice your Ski Italian ... skitalian ?

Skiing is one of the most popular winter activities in Italy. A large number of Italians move to the mountains during the winter – even abroad – just to practice this very popular sport. The most utilized/popular resorts are in the North, in the Alps, even if there are good ski resorts in southern areas, in the Apennines.

Sciare è una delle attività invernali più amate in Italia. Un gran numero di Italiani infatti durante l’inverno si reca in montagna – anche all’estero – per praticare questo popolare sport. Le strutture più utilizzate si trovano al nord, sulle Alpi, anche se sono presenti diverse stazioni anche più a sud, sugli Appennini.

Ma come detto molti italiani preferiscono spostarsi all’estero, anche perché molte strutture migliori di quelle italiane si trovano a pochi chilometri dal confine. È facile quindi trovare diversi italiani nella zona di Innsbruck, Austria, St. Moritz o Davos, Svizzera, a Chamonix o in Val d’Isere in Francia.

Un’usanza molto diffusa in Italia è quella di fare una breve vacanza invernale in montagna destinata alla pratica dello sci. Questa usanza è detta “settimana bianca”. Gli italiani trascorrono la settimana bianca anche praticando altri sport invernali come pattinaggio, snowboard, slittino o il semplice escursionismo.

Si è calcolato che nel 2009 per la settimana bianca ogni italiano abbia speso una media di 620 euro, principalmente in dicembre, quando le scuole sono chiuse per le festività natalizie. Le località più popolari per la settimana bianca sono Bardonecchia e Sestriere in Piemonte, Sondrio in Lombardia, Cortina in Veneto e molti paesi sulle Dolomiti.

Al sud, per ovvi motivi climatici, la tradizione della settimana bianca è meno sentita. Ciononostante è possibile trovare ottimi resort vicini agli impianti di risalita anche sugli Appennini.

Thus it’s easy to find Italians near Innsbruck, Austria, St. Moritz or Davos, Switzerland, Chamonix or Val d’Isere in France.

A popular tradition in Italy is having a brief vacation during winter time in the mountains, dedicated to the practice of skiing. This tradition is known as “Settimana Bianca” (white week). Italians spend the Settimana Bianca also doing some other sports like skating, snowboarding, sledding or simply having excursions.

It was calculated that in the 2009 every Italian spent an average of 620 euro for the Settimana Bianca, mostly in December, when the schools are closed due to the Christmas holidays. The preferred locations for the Settimana Bianca are Bardonecchia and Sestriere in Piemonte, Sondrio in Lombardia, Cortina in Veneto and many locations on the Dolomites.

In the South, for obvious climatic reasons, the traditional Settimana Bianca is less popular. Nevertheless people can find good resorts next to the ski lifts even in the Apennines.
