Spanish Verb PEDIR: to ask for

The Spanish verb pedir means 'to ask for ' and is an irregular Spanish IR verb.

To remember this, imagine you ask for a new PEDal!

Around 30 verbs are conjugated like pedir, replacing the e with an i in the present, preterite, subjunctive and imperative tenses.

USING the SPANISH VERB PEDIR

pedir can also mean: to request; to order; to need.
pedir disculpas : to apologise (to ask for pardons).
pedir prestado: to borrow (to ask to loan).
pedir a gritos to cry out.

el pedido (nm): order, request.
hacer un pedido: to place an order.
a pedido de: at the request of

la pedida (nf): proposal.
la pedida de mano (nf): marriage proposal (asking for hand).

vos replaces tú - you, informal, singular -
- in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and also in some countries of Central America.
Sometimes it also replaces the formal singular 'Usted'.
In irregular IR verbs, the conjugations remain the same as for tú except for the addition of accents in the following tenses:
Presente: vos pedís
Imperativo: ¡pedí!
